8/2/24 - Friday late lunch We three middle aged guys had arrived in Chetumal at 10:30 on a chicken bus from Orange View (left 07:50 early!) via the border. We walked from the main bus station the 1 mile south to the hotel Urban 101. On the way we passed this interesting restaurant getting ready to open up. Next to it was a large fishmongers (Pescaderia El Pelicano) obviously related to the restaurant. After checking in I checked TA for the Cynthia's reviews (none), then gglmps (finding a few, mostly positive). We visited the bayfront, had a beer at Winners overlooking the (smelly) sea I decided I'd take my friends the mile along the almost direct road back uphill to it. They were reluctant as we'd seen other restaurants closer to the hotel in the centre. We walked the straight road in the heat, thankfully without our backpacks this time, finding interesting park on the way with a weird fountain. At 15:50 we arrived at this large busy semi open air restaurant with big TV screens showing football. This place was for locals! We took a table on the periphery and were presented with menus in Spanish only, fair enough! I let my Spanish speaking friend do the translating as the staff did not speak English. We chose the tuna (228), 600g fried fish veracruza style (237) and a mixed seafood pasta (185). We ordered a negra modelo beer each (42) as usual. A basket of taco chips, bowl of finely chopped onions and a small plate of fishy salad and dressing were provided which was nice and tasty start to the meal as we were not having starters. A selection of condiments was in the table but nothing spicy, how we missed our Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce from Belize! Whilst waiting I took the opportunity to photograph the menu and the outside of the restaurant to confirm the opening times as TA and Gglmps did not have any timings or decent photos. The food took a while to arrive but we were not in a hurry and it was obviously being freshly prepared. We drank the first round of beer and ordered another. At 16:35 the dishes arrived...wow! They were piping hot. My fish had teeth! It was a vicious thing but was nicely cooked with a very tasty chunky sauce (with brandy!). A round of coleslaw, rice & beans and fried banana accompanied it. My friend's Tuna steak was generous, plain and pan fried with a vegetable salad including avocado. He was rather envious of my saucy dish but was happy that it was cooked nicely. It came with a plate of five quartered limes basket of hot tortilla under a napkin which we shared. Our friend's seafood pasta was an amazing generous mix of prawns, mussels, clams, octopus (unfortunately - just watch My Octopus Teacher on NF) and fish in a tasty tomato sauce with mantequilla. He really loved it! The pasta was linguine style and al dente just as he liked it. Normally pasta is cheaper, bulked out in carbohydrate and far less meaty/fishy but the sauce here was bigger than the pasta! We all tasted bits of each others' dishes and agreed on the quality. We also agreed that it was worth the mile trek back inland! We finished at about 17:15 and ordered the Bill that came (with some sweets) to an accurate 876 which I paid by phone and we left a 40 cash tip. I took a few more internal photos and we left very happy, sated and a little merry at around 17:32 to return the half mile downhill to the hotel on the main drag to the beach to see the carnival in preparation for the evening with more drag on show.
