Maratea en Tulum

My wife and I just had a gastronomic experience of high note. Maratea at the Conrad resort in Tulum is nothing short of amazing. I had the Dolas appetizer with tamarind sauce and grilled octopus with orzo for a main meal. Desert followed with a fruity creme brulee. First the atmosphere: I really enjoyed the ambience. We sat inside next to a floor to ceiling window and watched the light from day fade into night with the ocean in the background. This setting was delightful. The Dolas were very good! The tamarind sauce was a lovely addition when used sparingly. On its own the sauce is delicious, which caused me (and a 'more is better' approach to food) to put too much on. With judicious application, the combination was sublime. Too little and you were left with simply a really good Dolas, too much and you were looking for a glass of water (with fruit! Lime, lemon or orange!). The octopus was fantastic. It came with a sauce that actually made the decision to have the dish with or without sauce a difficult but entirely pleasant conundrum. You knew you were going to win, but which way was good for this bite? Wine? water? Sauce? No sauce? I try not to get overly enthusiastic but, that octopus was amazing. The orzo was good. Once I realized that the wine I selected was WAY too bold for the octopus, I happily discovered that it paired wonderfully with the strong, salty flavor of the orzo. I tucked in for more immediately. The service was outstanding, we wanted for nothing. Friendly, informative and fun. It was a lovely experience and we will return.
